The Interpretation of Leaves

Brown leaves dancing on the lawn,

like a flock of tiny birds,

suddenly rise into flight,

circling in late-autumn wind—

rustling omen of something,

but who can fortell of what?

Verbena

Bright purple flowers

made me plant it, and I love

how it overflows

the pot and spreads, but today,

it’s a leaf that I notice,

shaped like a small tree,

deep, rich green and serrated,

with crinkly textured that criss-crossed

with tiny patchworked

veins, as if the dark matte top

were quilted to the paler

fuzzy underside.
