Hot Evening

Eight in the evening on the hottest day this year,

neighborhood life finally beginning to stir:

Couples walking, pushing babies in strollers,

singles walking dogs, cats prowling lawns,

Latino guys playing volleyball,

black kids hanging out at Turner Park,

a few cyclists, not at racing speed,

shirtless white dude shooting hoops from street,

a lone angler fishing Braden Pond,

elderly couple in red canvas chairs,

a few youngsters feeding ducks and geese,

restless traffic heading nowhere special,

everyone sweaty, sticky, a bit on edge.
